Savannah State announces 2012 black heritage festival
SAVANNAH — The 2012 Savannah Black Heritage Festival will explore “Journeys, Passages and Transitions” from Feb. 1-16, 2012.  The festival is presented by the city of Savannah and Savannah State University and all events and activities are free and open to the public.
Each year, the black heritage festival offers events and activities for those of every age and interest.  Cultural education and exposure to the performing and visual arts, as well as ethnic cuisine, crafts, fun and family are emphasized throughout the celebration.  Included on this year’s schedule are performances by national recording artists and dance troupes; local youth talent showcases; historic tours; exhibitions by acclaimed local and international artists and sculptors; the W.W. Law Lecture Series; and spoken word and dramatic productions.  Educational opportunities will also be provided through a Health and Wellness Fair, culinary arts activities and youth programs.
Grand Festival Day, a family-oriented day of top entertainment and an annual festival highlight, will be held from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Savannah Civic Center.  In addition to a variety of activities and performances, food and retail vendors will be on hand with a wide variety of cuisine, goods and services.
The 2012 Savannah Black Heritage Festival will be the 13th festival produced by Savannah State University and the 23rd festival sponsored by the city. For more information, call 912-358-4309 or visit for updates.
Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah.  The university’s 4,500 students select majors from 25 undergraduate and five graduate programs in the School of Teacher Education and three colleges: Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology.
