SSU to be honored as Top HBCU by Upscale magazine at April 23 campus ceremony
SAVANNAH — Savannah State University has been selected the winner of Upscale magazine’s Institutions of Excellence Award for the Top Historically Black College/University (HBCU) in the country. The university will be presented with $5,000 in cash and prizes at a special campus ceremony at 2:30 p.m., Monday, April 23, in the new Student Union, where there will also be student prize giveaways and light refreshments.
Upscale named SSU the Top HBCU based on the university’s graduation rates, enrollment, academic performance, school history and commitment to student academic achievement. The magazine solicited reader responses on its website via a voting poll that appeared in the September/October 2011 issue. The awards ceremony is open to the public.
An Atlanta-based magazine company, Upscale provides business and entertainment news, health, beauty, and lifestyle information for African-Americans. The Institutions of Excellence Award was created in support of HBCUs and to recognize the current financial straits institutions are experiencing.
Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The university’s 4,500 students select majors from 25 undergraduate and five graduate programs in the School of Teacher Education and three colleges: Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology.

Congratulations on your well-deserved honor and ceremonies this week. I only wish I could have been there to applaud in person. Keep up the great work that’s been occurring since 1890.
