It comes as no surprise how glorified weight loss supplements and detoxes have become. With the help of pop culture and social media, pill supplements and detox teas have gained unsurprisingly high popularity among the masses. Out of those who are influenced to partake in the glory are women, especially those who care about their image, maintaining their figure, or have an unhealthy desire to lose weight. On a day-to-day basis women are frequently bombarded with thin images of other women through the media. Society continues to embed the underlying belief that beauty equates to how thin a person is, rather than taking into account their overall well-being and health.
Among all of the new weight loss and detoxification trends, one has solidified a prominent space in the “health” industry: teatoxes. It is as simple as it sounds. Tea being used to help detoxify the body, and one of the most celebrity-endorsed tea cleanses right now is Flat Tummy Tea (FTT). From Instagram posts with obviously attractive models and celebrities hash-tagging #teatox to visually appealing images of happily women in active wear posing with their product purchases, FTT has taken teatoxing to another level. Women and girls as young as 17 years old have purchased this product. However, one thing is unknown. Does FTT Tea or any of these tea detox cleanses actually work?
FTT is a tea cleanse created to help do away with bloating and the sluggish feeling that many feel after indulging in a delicious meal. According to their website, FTT is a two-step herbal detox tea that assists in reducing bloating, supporting the metabolism, boosting one’s energy, cleaning their system, and improving digestion. Sounds like the ultimate euphoric answer to solve unsatisfied weight loss goals.
The two step process is activating and cleansing. Step one is the activation phase. One is supposed to prepare their digestive system for the next day before they cleanse. The Activate AM Tea is to be consumed every morning with breakfast, and it only takes 5-7 minutes to prepare. Perfect prep time for a woman that is on the go. Step two is the cleansing phase, it is supposed to detoxify the intestinal tract so there is no build up and it also helps to reduce water weight. During the first week of the cleanse, one is supposed to drink the Cleanse PM Tea every other night. Then the following weeks, they are to consume the tea on every third night. The night time tea only takes 3-5 minutes to make.
Flat Tummy Tea offers three different cleanse plan packages. FT Two, is the two week cleansing plan. FT Four, is the four week cleansing plan. FT Next, is for those who want to maintain their flat tummy. At what cost would it take to do so? With such fast prep time and promising results, according to several celebrity-endorsed posts, one could only assume that this product is safe to use. Surprisingly, there is a disclaimer at the very bottom of the website that shares that FTT has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. There was also a section that listed specific information in regard to the popular product. Some information shared was that results may vary from person to person (of course everyone is not the same), a person who is pregnant or breastfeeding should not consume the tea, high doses of the tea can be toxic, the product is not intended to be used for long periods of time, those who are on “the pill” should use extra protection, and FFT is not a diet that can help with weight loss.
Maybe once in a blue moon, it wouldn’t hurt to do a tea detox, but not for a long period of time. The most important thing that needs to be done is helping some women develop more positive outlooks on being healthy, but that would only start as soon as society stops pushing thin images and unhealthy beliefs that thinness equates to beauty and healthy lifestyles.
