Summer. The days are hotter, longer, and filled with many more edible desires that are hard to turn down. Ice Cream Sundaes, hot dogs, popcorn, and other treats are typically more abundant and quickly consumed during this time of year. Even through the changing of seasons, our eating habits should not falter. Particularly, the summer is a critical period where your body needs plenty of fluids and nutrients to stay strong and energized. Try picking up a few of these easy tips to keep you healthy all summer long!

1. Increase your fluid intake: the brutal heat will lead to the inevitable rise of body temperature. Stay cool by increasing your fluid intake. The best selection is water, of course. The average adult should drink at least 64 ounces of water a day. Although sodas and sports drinks are good for replenishment, they contain large amounts of sugar, which can add unwanted pounds. Juice, however, is another good alternative. But always look for the cartons that are labeled as 100% Juice. Other substances may only have artificial flavoring, which, in truth, means you're drinking sugar water.
2. Eat lighter meals with a lighter fare: try to eat a variety of healthy dishes that consist of fresh fruits, vegetables, and salads. These meals are tasty, nutritional, lighter, and generally cheaper than a meal of Steak and Mushrooms or Lafayette Chicken, which can cause you to feel sluggish, bloated, and tired.
3. Stock up on healthy quick eats: nectarines, celery, carrot sticks, and bananas are perfect when you're on the run. Unlike junk food, fruits and vegetables provide minerals like potassium and Magnesium, fiber, vitamins, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C, and phytochemicals which work to protect you against diseases. These combining nutrients keep a body strong and healthy.
4. Follow the Dietary guidelines of the food pyramid: Regardless of the weather, try to consume the required amount of servings listed for each food group as diagramed on www.mypyramid.gov or as illustrated in the picture below.
