The Office of Academic Affairs announced that a virtual commencement ceremony for graduate and undergraduate students will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m.

Graduates are invited to submit a headshot of themselves, their name, and their major by Tuesday, April 28 in order to be included in the virtual event. The commencement will be pre-recorded, closed-captioned and broadcast through YouTube, Facebook, and the Savannah State University website.

Graduates are also invited to share photos of their celebrations, their graduation photos, etc. on social networks using the hashtag #savstate20.

“This is not meant to be a substitute celebration. This is just what we can do now. The intent is to do something to allow students to immediately celebrate their accomplishments with their families,” said interim president Kimberly Ballard-Washington.

Ballard-Washington said that there are ongoing discussions with leadership at the university to prepare for a future fall commencement for the class of 2020.

“The risk is scheduling something too early that some graduates aren’t able to make,” Ballard-Washington said.

The interim president, the provost, and deans will be participating in the virtual event to address the graduates and congratulate them on their accomplishments.
