Ten players from the Savannah State University women’s basketball team spent Tuesday afternoon teaching children in Savannah the fundamentals of the game.
Lead by Head Coach Cedric Baker, students from the university volunteered at the Habersham YMCA with about 15 elementary-aged children.
“We collaborated with the YMCA in a community service event to encourage young women to play the game of basketball and communicate the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” said Baker.
For sophomore center Alexxus Sowell, the experience was fulfilling.
“To give back to the community and show the little kids the fundamental of basketball, and let them have a good time doing something with a college team, and showing them my talent,” she said.
The football team did volunteer work in the fall semester, as well.
"Our hope is to continue with similar events in the very near future," Baker said.
