Alderman Van Johnson has announced his plans to run for mayor of the city of Savannah.

Johnson is an active Savannah State University alum who earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the university. He made his announcement in Forsyth Park on Feb. 18.

Johnson said, “Everything I am and have evolved to be is because of the love and nurturing of SSU.”

Johnson has served on the Savannah City Council for 16 years, four full terms, representing Savannah’s District 1. After pondering on the idea of running for mayor of the city for more than a year, he has officially put in his bid.

Johnson said he “felt that Savannah was becoming a place that I did not recognize...Savannah was becoming over commercialized and did not pay more attention to its citizens.”

Johnson wants Savannah to not only focus on the tourists, but the entire city altogether.
