There was a fast break on Saturday evening as the Lady Tigers took a big lead in the first quarter against the Hampton University Pirates.
Center Tiyonda Davis, senior, had 16 points, 12 rebounds, and added a career-high 8 blocks.
The Lady Tigers had the crowd on the edge of their seats as they fought hard to defeat the Lady Pirates.
This wasn’t the Tigers' toughest game but it was a game to embrace. The women beat the #1 ranked team in the MEAC conference with the final score of 55-51.
“What helped me take the lead in scoring for my team was the coaches. My coaches were telling me to keep up, I was coming out too slow. My coaches were on me the entire game." said Davis.
“My momentum in this game will carry me forward into the next game,” said Davis.
The Lady Tigers scored most of their points on fast breaks with a great defense. Guard Gaby Moss added 15 points.
Head Coach Cedric Baker said there were several key factors for the win.
“Our half-court defense," he said. "Going into the game, we wanted to out rebound them. We made them take shots under pressure and contested shots.
“We were able to get double figures out of our post player," added Baker. "We got high percentage shots from Tiyonda Davis. We gave ourselves the opportunity to be successful."
The Lady Tigers will take on Norfolk State University on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Tiger Arena
