The Savannah State University Tigers lost their season opener at an away game against the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazer's at Legion Field on Aug. 30, in a 52-0 shutout.
This was SSU's second Thursday night game since entering Division 1 in 2007 with over 27,000 individuals in attendance at the game.
In the first quarter, the Blazers scored their first ball possession for a 7-0 lead. UAB continued to expand their lead to 38-0.
The Tigers ended the contest with 178 offensive yards while picking up 12 for a first down having crossed the midfield twice during the game. In the final quarter, the Tigers used nine players to drive from their own 25 yards to the UAB 42 yards, the best drive of the game.
Offensively, Rashad Saxtons ran for forty-six yards, Jaylen McCloud ran for forty-three yards, and D’Vonn Gibbons ran for forty yards. Gibbons later completed one of nine passes for twenty-three yards, which was by D’Andre Snead.
Defensively, John Wilson performed an interception while Isaiah Bennett and Mulik Simmons both produced nine tackles each.
With only 3:23 remaining in the game, the Blazers added two more touchdowns which closed out the game with a score of 52-0.
The Tigers have their next game against the University of Miami at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8, at Hard Rock Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
