The 94th Academy Awards or Oscars took place at the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, Mar. 27, 2022. This year's host were Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes. The theme of the awards was “Movies Lovers Unite."
The biggest award went to “Coda” giving Apple+ the first ever best picture for a screaming service. The evening was going well until Will Smith walked onto the stage and smacked Chris Rock. AfterRock stated that he was excited to see Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith in G.I. Jane 2.
“Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see ya,” he said as the cameras cut to Will Smith laughing while Jada Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes at the remark. Jada who has been transparent about struggling with alopecia and did not appreciate the comment.
After the smack Smith yelled “Keep my wife's name out of your mouth!”
Will Smith was awarded the Best actor in leading role for “King Richard "with a heartfelt speech receiving a standing ovation after. The ratings for the Oscars shot up to 16.6 million viewers on Sunday up 58% from which was the record low audience at 10.5 million for the 2021 Oscars awards.
Law enforcement did approach Chris Rock where he refused to press charges against Will Smith. The next day Smith did apologize to the Academy, his nominees and the Williams family. He later publicly apologized to Rock online stating“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line, and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I wanted to be,” Smith continued. “There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.” The academy banned Smith for 10 years but said he can keep the awards.
